Goerz Reflex Ango

Traduction de P-Y Petit.

CP Goerz only manufactured Goerz Reflex Ango between 1909 and 1911, due, according to Mc Keown, to patents issues.

This camera is quite uncommon. It was manufactured in two different formats corresponding to two different names: the 9x12cm is called Reflex Ango and sold in continental Europe, while the 4x5 in. is called Folding Reflex and sold on the British and American markets.

Ango is the contraction of Anschütz and Goerz: it reminds the strong cooperation between both men, that can be seen on this model by the adoption of the focal plane shutter created by Ottomar Anschütz.
The conception of this camera is very peculiar, and only two manufacturers had a somehow similar design: the Ihagee Patent Klapp Reflex, which production only started in 1924, and the Ensign Folding Reflex model D, manufactured in 1914.

It is a single lens reflex that folds downwards, thereby protecting the lens in the frame of the camera.

The shutter is set by adjusting roller blind inter-space (7 levels) and spring tension (3 levels). The are therefore 21 possibilities ranging from 1/10th to 1/1200th!

The lens is a CP Goerz Celor F=168mm f4.8. The focusing scale is starting at 2 yards.

This camera comes from South Africa and was quite likely purchased in the UK. The user manual gives the address of the British branch: CP Goerz Optical Works Ltd au 1 to 6 Holborn Circus, London.

The first buyer wrote “sept 08” on the first page of the manual.
