The Minolta Hi-Matic series started in 1962 with the Hi Matic, first of the name, which was the first camera to travel in space! The first Hi-Matic were very good, but rather large, bulky cameras. The Hi-Matic E belongs to the second generation of Hi-Matics: it is really compact – very easy to carry on a daily basis.

Although it is small, it doesn’t give up any feature of its older brothers! First of all, the lens. It is a superb 40mm f1:1.7, that has excellent contrast and sharpness. Then, the rangefinder has built-in parallax correction! The CDS light meter is ingeniously mounted just above the lens, but below the filter thread… it will therefore automatically take into consideration any filter you will place on the lens! The Hi-Matic E also have numerous features not always found on such small cameras, such as hot shoe, self-timer, cable release…

The light meter controls both aperture and shutter speed (between 1/1000 and 2s), automatically… yes, automatically. The Hi-Matic E doesn’t have any manual mode. This is perfect if you don’t want to bother with aperture and/or shutter speed, but many photographers will miss a manual mode. The other drawback of this system is that the shutter won’t fire without batteries.
