Zeiss Ikon Contax IIIa

Traduction de Manuel M

It is exactly similar to the Contax IIa for which it is advisable to refer for the characteristics, including for the version of 1954. Except that it has ,as well, on the hood of a selenium cell not coupled.
In a completely coherent way, when, for export, the distances are marked in feet and not in meters on the ring of adjustment of the distance, then the sensitivity of film on the ring of adjustment of the cell is marked in ASA and either in DIN.

IIa and IIIa are the versions of post-war period of II and III of before (and during)-war.

Better than a long discourse, here the description of the various parts of Contax IIIa, got out of its manual:

And a view on its cell measuring and the controls of adjustment:

Contax IIIa equipped with the biogon 21 mm and its sight turret dedicated ~1954

This Contax IIIa is presented here with a Biogon 21 mm 1/4,5 especially manufactured for this camera (a version for Contarex also exists) and its turret viewfinder dedicated to this lens (reference Contax n° 440).
The wide angle lenses of 21 mm are difficult to build. Before the launch of the Biogon, one seldom went down below 28 mm from focal distance with apertures to f/8 or a little better to f/6,3. This model of Zeiss constitutes for the time a little  revolution: it is the first 21 mm correctly controlled with a strong profit in luminosity with f/4,5. Leitz will spend 4 years before marketing an equivalent product (Super Angulon manufactured by Schneider).  Built for approximately 7000 specimens its price held it to very rich customers.
Profiting from an excellent resolution and a good contrast combined with a perfect control of the distortion, some regard the performances of this objective as exceptional.
