Chronology of cameras Polaroid
C'est à partir de 1938 que sont publiés les premiers brevets déposés par la société Polaroid. Le plus ancien dépôt date de 1933 et s'est fait auprès de l'office allemand des brevets. Le délai entre le dépot et la publication n'est pas anormalement long, bien qu'on puisse se demander si les origines juives de Edwin Herbert Land n'ont pas été un frein dans l'Allemagne nazie.
Ce premier brevet concerne une sorte de filtre formé d'un liquide et laissant passer la lumière en fonction d'un champ électrique ou magnétique. La même année est publié un brevet pour des systèmes optiques polarisants. L'invention est destinée à s'appliquer à la projection de fim en relief ou a équiper les automobiles en limitant l'éblouissement des phares.
Parmi les 18 brevets publiés par Polaroid en 1939, la plupart concernent une application ou un développement autour de la polarisation de la lumière.
En 1940, il en est de même pour les 9 brevets publiés cette année-là.
En 1941, un brevet protége la lecture de la bande sonore d'un film par utilisation de la lumière polarisée.
Le brevet 2 251 330 du 5 août 1941 a pour objet des lunettes à densité variable. L'inventeur n'est pas Edwin H. Land mais Murry N. Fairbank. L'invention est majeure.
En 1942, Polaroid continue les publications de brevets en lien avec la polarisation, mais s'intéresse aussi à la fabrication d'objets en plastique moulé, polarisants etc. En 1943, le brevet 2 337 617 s'applique aux Goggles ( et non Google), lunettes de protection qui inaugurent la forme actuelle des lunettes de ski.
En 1946, Polaroid publie plusieurs brevets portant sur un télémètre, dont l'inventeur est Edwin H. Land lui-même. On trouve également un brevet pour un badge personnel infalsifiable.Un autre brevet, publié au Canada a pour objet Photographic Film, mais il n'est pas encore question de photographie instantanée.
En 1947, plus d'une centaine de brevets sont publiés par Polaroid, et parmi eux, de nombreux s'appliquent à la photographie, mais aucun ne concerne un appareil photo en tant qu'objet complet. Ce n'est qu'en 1948 que Polaroid publie plusieurs brevets dont l'objet est un appareil photo. C'est le début d'un longue saga.
Le brevet 2 455 111 présente un appareil très ressemblant au Polaroid 95.
More than two kilos for this camera which seems very massive because of the black color of its viewfinder. However, it is of the same format as the 800 which is light gray.
On the other hand, the 900 is presented as "automatic", offering many shooting aids:
Rangefinder focusing by superimposed images: the measurement is made in a small yellow parallelogram in the center of the viewfinder and a movable yellow frame corrects the parallax according to the shooting distance.
The cocking lever appears in the sights when not cocked. Its lowering simultaneously activates the "electric eye" which will determine the exposure after a time of about 8 seconds.
There is, as on all Polaroids, the possibility of set up the exposure. A manual control is available to choose its depth of field, the duration of the exposure B or the manual control of the flash.
The accessory shoe contains the contacts necessary for the automatic control of the Wink-Light, a dedicated flash with double reflector whose commissioning is determined by the automatic control of the 900.
A European X-synchro flash socket is available on the back of the shutter plate.
The absence of a shot counter is explained by the marking of the film shots which will be extracted after each shot.
The 8.5 x 10.5 cm photos obtained after one minute require a small negative / positive manipulation before being glued on a support and protected by a varnish.
