Les Ensign Carbine ont d'abord été construits par Butcher, puis par Houghton suite à la fusion de ces marques en 1926.
Initialement construits pour pellicules seulement, ils ont souvent évolués vers des appareils mixtes pellicule/plaque.
Houghton a produit de très beaux foldings tropicaux, tous caractérisés par un revêtement "en cuivre oxydé " (bronze Florentin d'après Mc Keown, donc un laiton à 85 % de cuivre et 15 % de zinc) et soufflet cuir havane.
