Chronology of cameras Rollei

The Rolleiflex 4 x 4 Model 4 K.1A 430, was produced between February 1938 and February 1941, in the nameplate serial numbers range 622,000-734,999. A total of 2174 cameras were produced.

The Fourth Model of 1938 (later called ‘the Sports Rolleiflex’) failed to revolutionise the original 4x4 concept - a disappointment for those who expected a camera based on the Automat of the previous year, with its brilliant automatic stop at the first frame and simultaneously tensioning of the shutter. Instead, the mechanisms were no different from the previous 4 x 4 model, with its red window for positioning the first frame and separate shutter tensioning. It was only produced with the Carl Zeiss Tessar 2.8. The major differences go no further than the double bayonet on the taking lens, the encasing of the shutter and the Automat styled peep window.  It did however follow the 1937-1938 changes to the Rolleiflex Automat and the Rolleicord lines, such as the cast nameplate and pressed aluminium parts instead of brass. All the rest, including the viewing hood, is basically the same.   Many authors therefore, Claus Prochnow included, regard it as simply the last type of the Original 4x4 Rolleiflex.

The faster shooting capability which was thought to deserve the name ‘Sports’ derives from its focusing system, which focuses in a single revolution from infinity to 0.9m. The knob also has a depth-of-field scale, thus avoiding the need for a table on the rear hood panel.
