Chronology of cameras Fed
The Fed 2 was a major breakthrough in the history of the FEDs.
Its main advantages over the Fed I were :
Ultra-wide 67mm rangefinder particularly suitable to the use of tele lenses .
Cast (and bright).viewfinder and rangefinder
Excellent grip while kept compact and pleasant.
Removable back for quick film loading .
The first series are recognizable by their square rangefinder window then screwed to allow disassembly and adjustment of rangefinder.
My 1955 model equipped with a round window has a true advantage : Shutter speed can be modified before or after film advance. Fed writing is exclusively in Cyrillic. The lens Industar 26 will be assigned until the 1960s when the Industar 60 take over with an optical quality further improved.
It has handy belt clips . Accesories oddly often missing in cameras produced in USSR .
A flash sync is also available on the front of the housing .
Several color variants will emerge.
In the opinion of many, it is the most functional and most attractive variation of the Fed II. Afterward, the Fed II will be fitted with unsightly accessories and buttons... but essential to stay ' in fashion ' : self timer, enlarged knob with film type rerminder , lens with grooves replacing the lever ... The beautiful staircase shaped cover will be also replaced in the 70s by a much less elegant simplified model (kept on the Fed III).
Placing his eye behind the viewfinder of a Fed II is to discover another vision of photography. Many still use it happily as a first choice camera or as a backup of a modern camera increasingly coveted and dependent on batteries....
Only its cousin, the Zorki 3M ( great viewfinder and sumptuous finish) will bring you more fun in the range of Russian Leica copies ...
