Chronology of cameras Graflex
The camera shows an identification plate with the serial number USMC 1805. USMS for U.S. Marine Corps.
This military camera designed to equip photographers in action in the Pacific. Two finishes are available for the USMC Olive Drab and Grey for the Navy.
There are currently no bellows . It is replaced by a cone made of treated wood to withstand humid climates of the Pacific.
The focusing , cocking and triggering are made using levers located on the right side. The device also has a rear curtain type shutter, without tension adjustement with the following speeds: 125/250/500/1000 .
The flash is specific , a three connectors socket system is located on the left side of the camera and batteries are housed in the camera .
At the end of the war, a number of cameras were converted for civilian market under the name Graphic 45 , with a different nameplate . The surplus military cameras were supposed to be destroyed but many were recovered by Burke and James signing over their brand and painting them in black. They were sold down to the 60s by B & J for $ 75 each .
Note that almost all models have been fitted with Graflex spring backs and the version presented on this page, with a " graphic back " is relatively rare to find in its original state .
The life of this unit within the U.S. Army has extended until the Vietnam war.
