Ansco N°1A Automatic

In 1924, when this camera appeared on the market it was very innovative.  Not because it had an automatic, motorized film transport (The earlier “Le Pascal” from the French company Japy already had motorized film transport) but because it was the first camera to use an automatic film advancing mechanism for paper backed film.  The film is a n° 6A automatic Ansco which was custom made for this camera and which allowed for 6 frames with a 2 ½ X 4 ¼ inch size.
The operation of the motor is very simple, one has to first wind the motor by turning the key in the direction indicated by an arrow.  Pressing a lever which is situated under the bellows on the right side of the camera will activate the motor and transport the film to the next frame.
The motor is situated under a recess situated left from the bellows, therefore the camera is not symmetrical, contrary to most classic folders.  Some models have an additional viewfinder on the same side.
Finally, the footrest also has an uncommon design. The motor is extremely robust: 87 years after being made it still operates without a flaw.
