Chronology of cameras Boyer

Boyer was an optician, and many French cameras were equipped with Boyer lenses. The company published a catalog, presumably intended for distributors and professionals, showcasing numerous models. It is unlikely that Boyer handled distribution directly.

Under the leadership of Mr. Lévy, who merged the Boyer and Lemaire companies, certain cameras from this brand became full-fledged Boyer products.

__________

In the 1931 Boyer catalog, the Lemaire No. 21 is listed with the same characteristics as the Boyer Labor.

It is unlikely that any distributor had all fifteen variations of each of the three formats in stock, but they had the option to choose.

__________

En 1847, Mr. Lemaire founded a company with just one worker, which would later become the Lemaire Binoculars Manufacture, and then the Baille-Lemaire and Sons Establishments. In 1861, Mr. Lemaire established a training school and a boarding school for apprentices. In 1865, he created a mutual aid fund. In 1869, he introduced a attendance bonus. In 1870, Jean-Baptistin Baille (1841-1918), a graduate of the École Polytechnique, friend of Zola and Cézanne, married Armande Louise, Mr. Lemaire's daughter, and in 1871 became the co-director. Mr. Lemaire passed away in 1881. Jean-Baptistin Baille took over the management of the factory in 1885. The factory was then named Lemaire-Baille. On many patents filed by the company, Jean Louis Baille, the son of Jean-Baptistin, is presented as the inventor of the patented product.

Lemaire produced some fine models of cameras with innovative technical features protected by patents.

The following patents all list Jean Louis Baille (26 Oberkampf Street, Paris) as the inventor and Baille-Lemaire and Sons as the applicant.

Patent No. 543,909, filed on November 25, 1921, for improvements made to the focusing devices of cameras.
Patent No. 1,481,673, filed on February 6, 1922, for a combined roll-holding and plate camera Patent No. 1,512,664, filed on October 30, 1922, for System of braces for supporting the folding beds of folding cameras
Patent No. 1,528,239, filed on October 30, 1922, for Supporting device for objectives of photographic apparatus Patent No. 1,544,794, filed on October 30, 1922, for Distance-indicating device for the focusing of photographic apparatus

Patent No. 1,579,345, filed on February 6, 1923, for Plate-carrying frame for photographic apparatus

En 1911, there is also a patent (No. 421 0235) for an adjustment method and device for rangefinders filed by the company Baille-Lemaire and Sons, with no inventor mentioned. In 1912, there are other patents for a Sitomicrometer with self-collimating prisms (No. 443 041) or for an optical system with multiple magnifications and automatic focus retention (No. 445 333), etc. Patent filings cease during the First World War and only resume in 1920. The filings definitively stop in 1923.

Despite a rich history, Lemaire is somewhat unknown as a camera manufacturer. Perhaps this is due to the absorption of the company by Boyer, the optician who incorporated the cameras under his own brand.
