Mackenstein Francia Pliante série VIII
Mackenstein Francia Pliante Sèrie VIII (1904)

This beautiful strut folding camera is an early Mackenstein Francia Pliante Série VIII. It is very similar to the version of 1903, but it also shows a number of features present in the version of 1905. Most probably it was made in 1904. It was designed for 9 x 12 cm plates.

The casing is covered in black leather, the articulated struts are fixed on the top, and has a polished wooden front standard. The top of the camera has a rounded bump due to the configuration of the focal plane shutter. All these characteristics are similar to the 1903 model. The viewfinder is however very similar to the model of 1905, located on the anterior top of the casing and with a pointer on the front standard. The fixation of the struts to the front standard is also similar to the version of 1905. The camera has un-pleated dark red bellows.

The shutter is close to the one fitted on the 1903 model (patent FR317387), with the rounded upper and lower bumps because of the position of the drums. However, the controls are somewhat different which suggests an evolution of this shutter. The model of 1905 has again a different configuration of controls.

The lens is a Goerz Doppel Anastigmat Serie III/1 with focal length of 150mm and maximum aperture of 6. The lensboard rotates and permits horizontal and vertical movements.
