Chronology of cameras Rollei

The Rolleiflex 4x4 Model 3 K.1A 423, is easily identifiable by the presence of peep window above the viewing lens, a Compur Rapid shutter to a maximum speed of 500 and a Tessar 1:2.8 as taking lens. The nameplate serial numbers are within the ranges 155,000-159,000 and 522,000-527,000. Production was between December 1934 and January 1938. The hidden body serial numbers (meaning production) are in the range 11,4xx to 14,720 (together with the rare model 422 with Tessar 1:3.5). Franke & Heidecke produced around 3100 of these cameras.

The major distinguishing feature of the third model is the Deckel Compur Rapid shutter with speeds to 500. According to Prochnow, it was only after nameplate 155,812 that the focusing knob was enlarged and marked with a scale in feet or metres, and the frame counter numbered up to frame 13 (a red dot). Other changes are:

  • The inscription Compur Rapid was first in the inner part of the shutter, and then at the outer speed selector wheel;
  • The exposure table acquired the DIN system, and in export cameras the Hurter & Driffield system was first 2700/1000 and later 4400/2700, as in the Rolleiflex Standard;
  • The later cameras of the 522,000527,000 batch have the new speed scale, where 250 substitutes 300;
  • The inscription ‘F. Deckel’ was first script, as in the second model, then in caps, and finally vanished.

This particular camera has the 250 speed on the scale.
