The ST801 was presented at the Photokina 1972 as the logical development of ST701 released in 1970. It hangs on the same size.

The ST801 is a semi-automatic camera (metering with opened aperture). In the viewfinder, on the right side, there are a vertical range of seven diodes (LEDs are very new in this era that’s why an acronym in front of the camera reminds their presence). The three highest diodes feature a + LED and an arrow pointing down, while the three lowest feature a - LED and an arrow pointing upwards. The exposure is correct for an eighth of aperture when only the central LED is lit. Otherwise, it must act on the shutter speed or the aperture ring.

To the left of the viewfinder, the selected shutter speed is reminded permanently. The viewfinder is very simple and readable particularly in the dark.

A push button located near the lens can make the exposure metering with the closed aperture, but beware, this is only possible with the EBC Fujinon lenses. Admittedly, the mount of the lenses is the screw mount with a diameter of 42, which offers the possibility of using the lenses the most diverse, but the EBC lenses (Electron Beam Coating) are the only ones to have additional contacts that allow this metering mode.
The EBC lenses are multilayer coated, even with eleven layers. The coating product is layed down by electron bombing.

The metering is done by silicon cells placed on each side of the eye. The shutter speeds range from the second to 1/2000 per sec. Films from 25 to 3200 asa are accepted.
The reflex room is smothered by an anti-flare flocking.

This camera works with a silver cell in the kind of PX28.
