Chronology of cameras Caillon
The Stratus was built starting from circa 1908 by E. Caillon based on the Jumelle Pliante Series D (from the same manufacturer), simply renamed without any notable changes. It existed in formats 6.5 x 9, 9 x 12, and 9 x 14. The specimen presented here is in the 6.5 x 9 format.
The shutter, with prior winding using a rotary key on the front, is of the guillotine type. From circa 1917, the presentation of the Stratus in the 6.5 x 9 format was redesigned. The post-war version shows a Davanne iconometer viewfinder (with a folding frame and rear eyepiece) in place of the optical viewfinder. The shutter speeds are now engraved on the crown surrounding the winding key.
It is this version that is presented here, and which was marketed between circa 1917 and circa 1926.
