Chronology of cameras Graflex
Lens (standard) Ilex Paragon 6 ½ inch f/4.7 or Kodak 152mm f / 4.7 Often retooled in the '50s with Wollensack Raptar 135mm, Schneider Xenar 135 or 150mm, KodakEktar 127mm f/4.7 .
Central shutter : Acme No 3 1s - 1/400s original Sync X and M.
Focal plane shutter 1/10 to 1/1000s + T exposure.
Coupled rangefinder Hugo Meyer or Kalart fixed laterally .
The Ilex Paragon lens is a Tessar formula , it is a classic lens of the time found on many cameras and even some aerial cameras . The Acme shutter is huge , it looks like an alarm clock, flash sync. delay time is expressed on a graduated dial on the side of the shutter, in milliseconds : from 0 to 25 ms. Until the late forties , the press cameras were equipped with lenses whose normal focal length was about 150mm . Later, at the beginning of the next decade , lenses, initially designed for sizes 3" ¼ x 4"¼ will be installed on 4X5" cameras as the Kodak Ektar 127mm , which has long held the upper hand in terms of definition and color rendition. Other lenses , German or American were installed with focal lengths of about 135mm . The use of lenses with shorter focal length then seemed advisable for press photography , the use of a wide angle lens offsetting the loss of definition on the edges of lenses designed for smaller formats. A modification of this type has been performed on this unit by myself, in accordance with what was at the time. The interest of a Speed Graphic Anniversary compared to any other press camera: the boards are 4x4 inch size and are easy to be home made and the focal plane shutter allows you to use all kinds of lens even without shutter: reprographic lens, enlarger lenses to make macro photography, etc. .
