Chronology of cameras SFOM
The SFOM, or Société Française d’Optique et de Mécanique, was originally located in Rueil-Malmaison but relocated to Pau during the Occupation. It was there that a small team designed and produced a compact camera using 9.5mm unperforated film for the special services of the military (see the spy camera).
After the war, the company introduced the Sfomax for the civilian market. They also supplied cameras for aerial reconnaissance.
Traduction de Dan Fromm.
The SFOM 681 is an aerial reconnaissance camera that uses perforated 70 mm film, giving negatives 6 x 7 cm.
Shutter cocking is coupled to the film advance; turn the right grip half a turn. The shutter is released with the thumb, without having to let go of the camera.
The lens is interchangeable, here it is an "f=121,50 mm 1/2 Tirage Infra +0,35 mm S.F.O.M. F 120 Type 121 N° 21128".
The rear of the mount is engraved “"S.F.O.M. Cone F 120 Type 680 N° 21128 Marché N° 082 / 160:08 Fin de garantie 6 / 65"
This camera is odd in that it has an interchangeable shutter, and the three shutters delivered in its case give speeds 1/300, 1/500 and 1/1000. (shutter with a fabric curtain and fixed-length slit)
The 681 is a development of the 680 and differs from in only in a few fine points.
