Chronology of cameras Contax

In 1996, building on the success of the Contax G1 and responding to professional demand, Kyocera introduced an improved version logically named the G2.

Compared to the G1, the improvements mainly focused on the autofocus, which became more responsive, and on the shutter. It now allowed for 1/4000th of a second in manual mode or 1/6000th in aperture priority mode.

The ergonomics were also revamped, with separate dials for shutter speeds and exposure compensation. Due to space constraints, the manual focus dial was relocated to the front of the camera body, reminiscent of the Contax cameras made by Zeiss Ikon in the 1930s.

The burst mode now offered two speeds: 2 or 4 frames per second, and the flash synchronization extended to 1/200s.

Slightly larger than the G1, the G2 maintained full compatibility with the G-mount lens range. A new, more compact flash (TLA200, NG 20) complemented the system, and the data back now included an intervalometer.

Two new lenses were added to the lineup: the 21mm f/2.8 Biogon with an external viewfinder, and the 35mm f/2 Planar, which did not enjoy an excellent optical reputation (modest sharpness, visible distortions). These lenses could also be used on a G1, provided the autofocus was upgraded by Kyocera.

A surprising addition was the "Vario Sonnar 35-70" zoom lens, exclusively for the G2.

Later on, a black finish would appear as a limited edition, catering to customers desiring more discretion. Less common, it became highly sought after by collectors.

In 2005, Kyocera transferred its photo division to Cosina, which subsequently ceased production of the G2.

In 1996, this camera cost   11,900 francs for the body alone!
