Chronology of cameras Canon
Canon, a manufacturer of cameras and lenses, is also a medical equipment supplier. Thus, this late 1970s camera is dedicated to fundus examinations performed by ophthalmologists.
It is specifically designed to be mounted on a Canon CF 60U or CF 60ZA angiograph. It retains the Canon FD bayonet and the camera's power supply is provided by a 6-volt battery, although it operates with a specific MZ motor whose power supply is external. It features a cloth shutter curtain; film exposure was controlled by the angiograph at a fixed shutter speed. The unconventional viewfinder device is non-removable and is designed to provide a framed image of the fundus. To aid the operator in focusing on the ground glass, a large reticle is present. Diopter correction is available between +4 and -2 diopters by rotating the eyepiece. It's worth noting that the shape of the reflex viewfinder mirror is different from that of an A-1 or AE-1. It is truncated on the sides but especially longer by about 10 mm and almost reaches the top position, almost finishing its course at the level of the bayonet plate. Therefore, caution should be exercised not to mount a lens directly on this device, as it could damage the viewfinder mirror if the camera is triggered. A vertically positioned rectangular window allows for the photographic recording of a 4-digit number, which is set on the angiograph.
The fundus image is recorded on the film within a horizontally truncated circle at the top and bottom (29 mm in its largest diameter by 22 mm in height). A very small crescent-shaped notch of about 1 mm (present here at 1 o'clock) appears on the photo. Its shape and positioning on the circular perimeter allow for identification of the camera's make: a crescent for Canon, a square for Topcon, and a triangle for Olympus.
Nowadays, equivalent equipment has become digital or has been replaced by tomography devices.
This Canon F-A derived from the AE-1, with a film advance lever design very similar. It has the same 12mm diameter shutter release button. Some unnecessary controls have been removed such as the depth of field preview, the shutter speed selector (single speed), and the sensitivity adjustment, as it is set on the angiograph.
Under the same name, Canon manufactured another slightly different model.
