The Canon AF35 M was a huge and well-deserved success. Canon took it as a basis to design the AF35 ML, incorporating its features and further enhancing the results.
It features an extraordinary 1.9/40 mm lens with 5 isolated lenses (identical formula to the Xenotar designed by Schneider).
There's no manual focus adjustment. When the electromagnetic shutter release (hence the absolute necessity of a battery) is lightly pressed, the measurement is taken and remains memorized until the pressure is released. This allows for the main subject of the photo to be off-center. In the viewfinder, three icons indicate the focus area. By default, the focus distance is set at 2.5 meters. The autofocus is based on the use of a CCD sensor (!).
The automatic exposure cannot be overridden. It covers sensitivities from 25 to 400 ASA. Sensitivity adjustment is manual, done by turning the slim ring around the lens. A beep sounds in low light conditions.
The film advances automatically, potentially up to one image per second if the finger remains on the shutter release. Rewinding is also motorized.
The built-in flash has a guide number of 11, ensuring a range of 0.9 to 5.7 meters at 100 ASA. Recycling time is 7 seconds. The exposure speed switches to 1/45th.
On the back of the camera, there's a round switch with four positions: BC (battery check), OFF, ON, and Self-Timer.
Its release on the French market in January 1982 was praised by critics.
