Chronology of cameras Omni

This is a nicely made, but bulky camera of the period. The 7.8mm - 23.4 mm lens suggests that it might have a sensor about 1/1,7 behind it. The mode dial has click stops for auto, manual, camera settings, sports, low light, landscapes, portraits and close up. There is a video button in the centre of it. The "manual" mode allows the operator to select any shutter speed in the series between 1/5 s and 1/2000 s, and any aperture between 2,8 and 8,0 in 1/3 EV increments.

it has some features in common with contemporary Sony Cybershot cameras (DSC-V1) and some with Canon Powershot cameras (A95), but perhaps its' greatest is with Aldi cameras. In particular, the graphics used on the mode dial and the reference to a "Fine zoom lens" are similar to those used on Aldi cameras of the period, and it may have come from the same nameless factory in China - or Taiwan. the range of adjustment possible in "manual" mode is remarkable.

The brand "Omni" has been used by many companies. In 2004 it was adopted by the Lensbaby company in the USA. It is possible that this camera was used as a promotional item by one or more companies at the same time. The manufacturer saved some money by providing a clip on lens cover, rather than the more usual "shutters" over the lens.
