Still a model of longevity, like Russian knew to propose some of them to us. Cosmic Symbol was manufactured beginning of the 70s to 1993. Its success is undoubtedly due to its simplicity and its low price, with export.
On the ring of distance setting, there are symbols, a scale graduated in meters and a scale graduated in…. feet. Around the lens, there is a ring of aperture setting, which curiously is also graduated of sensitivity of film. The setting speed is done while turning the ring the crenelated ring. It moves a white reference mark which it is necessary to reveal in one of the small windows located beside weather reference marks. When one looks at there well, a graduation of speed exists, but below.
The winding is made with a lever that it is necessary to move once and half. The view counter is located at the back, under the clip. The back is flanked of a rotary exposure table. It is necessary to indicate the sensitivity of film to it, by positioning the figure corresponding to film, opposite the small arrow.
The drawing of a sun and that of a bulb, indicates that when it makes clearly (sun), it is necessary to indicate, with the ring located around the lens, a less sensitivity (what amounts indicating a larger diaphragm number) and the reverse with less light (bulb).
The lens is indicated like one 4/40 mm, but the tests carried out by Chasseur d' Images (n°28 of February 1981) revealed a maximum aperture of 5. The same tests concluded that the lens is not too badly, to compare with a average reflex zoom of then.
The name “Cosmic Symbol” is the name for export. On the domestic market, it was called Smena.
