Chronology of cameras Tougodo
History of the brand Tougodo New window

There were at least three variations on the Meikai EL, one with a black name plate and two with a golden one. This is probably an early one with a smaller rewind knob, and the characteristic three pointed symbol on the wind lever.

It is solid, and quite well made, unlike the contemporary 'Diana' cameras with which it is often compared. It has two shutter speeds, which requires an understanding of how the shutter and aperture work together. The other "EL" with the golden name plate and larger rewind knob, has only one shutter speed and 'B'.

These were often sold in mixed businesses and novelty stores, which may have been because camera shops did not want to sell them, or because it was a clever sales strategy. They found the niche in the USA for very cheap 35 mm cameras.
