Chronology of cameras Nettel

The Nettel first appeared in 1903 under the brand name Süddeutsches Camerawerk Koerner & Mayer G.m.b.H., and would live until the late 1930s crossing several brand names. The first models had a non self-capping shutter, which required extra care not to expose the plate when setting the shutter. This camera belongs to this first generation of the Nettel, being dated from 1907.

The camera is made of light wood covered with black leather and is designed for plates or cut film holders of 9 x 12 cm. This particular camera has the K&M symbol on the left side, but the frontal plate reads Krauss & Pfann (Zürick-Stuttgart) indicating it was commercialized in Switzerland.

The struts are the typical Nettel type, with automatic lock at infinity. The focusing is made by a knob above the shutter control on the right side of the camera, and scale in meters is located at the slot on the top of the camera. It has a direct vision frame and ground glass for accurate focusing.

The focal plane shutter has an early design and has controls for slit width and spring tension, delivering speeds in the range 1/15 to 1/1375 and T.  The objective is a Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar of 150 mm of focal length and maximum aperture of 6,3.

These early Nettel cameras are rare these days.
