The evolution of this series was constant and regular. with many models every year. Some developments. such as the longest focal length. seem to be more of a marketing gimmick than a response to a need. IS means that the lens is stabilized. HS corresponds to a noise reduction system appearing with the DIGIC 5 processor. HS cameras are also stabilized.

In 2013, one year after the release of the Powershot SX260 HS, Canon introduced the Powershot SX280 HS. It is the same camera equipped with Wi-Fi, allowing image transfer to a computer without needing a connection. However, a dedicated application must be installed on the computer.
Unlike some of its competitors, it is not possible to use the Wi-Fi to remotely control the camera from a phone.
