Chronology of cameras Contessa-Nettel
This particular model is the first version of the Contessa-Nettel Piccolette, dating back to 1919 or possibly 1920. It features only a single "sports" viewfinder, unlike later and more common models which have an additional clear viewfinder located behind a round opening in the upper left corner of the front plate. Consequently, due to space constraints, the designation "Piccolette" that originally appeared above the lens was later moved below on models with the clear viewfinder.
The name "Piccolette" was adopted from a Nettel model produced from 1914 until the merger with Contessa in 1919, although that was a folding camera rather than a Klapp.
The Piccolette enjoyed significant and enduring success: it continued to be produced by Zeiss Ikon after the 1926 merger and was imitated by several other brands.
The example shown, which lacks a distance adjustment, was likely imported and sold in France by a retailer as it is equipped with a rare Topaz 6.3 x 72 mm lens from Boyer Frères in Paris.
