Chronology of cameras Canon
The Canon P was released in March 1959.
Named P for Popular, this attempt by Canon to produce a simplified, low-cost rangefinder camera was a commercial success, selling 87,875 units. Today, its simplicity, reliability, and build quality make it a sought-after camera.
Its main features are:
- Interchangeable lenses in the 39mm Leica screw mount.
- Combined rangefinder viewfinder with automatic parallax correction and frame lines for 35mm, 50mm, and 100mm focal lengths.
- Lever wind mechanism, steel curtain focal plane shutter providing speeds from 1 second to 1/1000s, X and M synchronization at 1/25.
- Hinged back
- Rewind crank
- Standard Canon Serenar 50mm f/1.4 lens, with f/1.2 available on order.
In my opinion, the Canon P is one of the best rangefinder cameras ever built. Solid, elegant, well-balanced, it's a joy to photograph with. It compares without shame to the Leica M2 and M3, its direct competitors, and the improvements made over earlier series are significant. The hinged back, lever wind mechanism, and rewind crank make it a modern camera.
Its selling price in 1959 was 52,700 Yen.
