Chronology of cameras Sans Marque

Magasins DufayelSans Marque was the brand associated with the Dufayel department stores. The Grands Magasins Dufayel was a former Parisian department store opened in 1856 on Boulevard Barbès in Paris under the name "Palais de la Nouveauté" by Jacques François Crespin. After the founder's death, it was taken over by one of his employees, Georges Dufayel. The department store occupied monumental buildings and claimed to be the world's largest establishment of its kind on the eve of World War I. It closed its doors in 1930.

Les Grands Magasins Dufayel

The Dufayel Department Store specialized in selling home furnishing and household equipment on credit. Magasins DufayelAfter the founder's death in 1888, the store was acquired by Georges Dufayel. Between 1874 and 1913, buildings designed by architects Alfred Le Bègue, his son Stephan, and Gustave Rives were progressively constructed on a plot of just over one hectare bordered by Boulevard Barbès, Rue de Clignancourt, Rue Christiani, and Rue de Sofia. In 1892, the main entrance of the store, located at 26 Rue de Clignancourt, was grandly redesigned with a pediment by Jules Dalou and sculptures by Alexandre Falguière. Magasins DufayelThe entrance was crowned by a dome that housed a beacon illuminating Paris.

To attract customers, the department store included a large theater and a winter garden. In 1912, the Grands Magasins Dufayel employed 15,000 people and boasted of being the most significant establishment of its kind in the world. The artist Jean Dupas created advertising posters for them.

Georges Dufayel passed away in 1916, and the department store closed its doors in 1930.

After World War II, the Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP) established its central services (6,000 employees) in the former department store buildings, including the dome, and the monumental entrance was demolished in 1957.

Here are some engravings from a small catalog in my collection, although unfortunately, they do not show the cameras (1899-1900).
