Chronology of cameras Beck R J
The commercial services at Beck seem to struggle to find original names for the most standard cameras, such as this single-extension or double-extension chamber, or even the folding version. One possible explanation is that these cameras may not have been manufactured directly by Beck.
The single-extension model is made of "dry wood" and covered with imitation leather. However, the bellows are indeed made of leather, and the flap is made of aluminum alloy.
The front movement is achieved by pinching the metal parts at the base of the U and pulling the assembly forward. A graduated plate next to which there is a metal index moving with the lens gives an idea of the focusing distance. Vertical shift is done using a micrometer screw, but lateral shift is less fine. The rectifying viewfinder does not appear to be pivotable and is not accompanied by a level.
The standard lens is basic, being a Beck Symmetrical. For a higher cost, it is possible to have a Beck Neostigmar Series II N, with an aperture of f/6.
This simple model is also available in formats 3 1/2 x 2 1/2, quarter plate, and Carte Postale."
In 1854, two brothers, Richard and Joseph Beck, renamed their London-based optics and microscope company to R & J Beck Ltd after the withdrawal of their third partner, James Smith. The production of cameras began in 1880, and it was in 1892 that the Frena models with their unique system of a notched-edge roll film magazine were introduced.
