"The Universal Camera" is a generic name used by Colnaghi, Dalzini & Co, a manufacturer based in Milan, and whose representative in France was Emile Target.
The cameras with this name are either box cameras or detective cameras. They are made of American wood and covered with various types of coatings. The shutter is simple, allowing for time exposure and instantaneous shots, except for cameras in the L series, which have a pneumatic shutter.
They are divided into several series.

For the detectives of the H series, the construction uses very dry American wood. It is covered with coarse-grained Pégamoïd.
The essential differences with the lower models are the viewfinders and the presence of close-up lenses allowing to reduce the focusing distance to 1, 3, or 5 meters.
