Chronology of cameras Marcilly
This camera is a creation of H. Marcilly, inventor of photographic equipment and founder of the Compagnie de fabrication et de distribution de matériel de photographie in Paris.
The front face can be raised and even removed by extracting the piano hinge pin that holds it at the top. This reveals the lens and the shutter. A circular plate bearing distance indications is centered under the large focusing knob, which moves the front face mounted on a rack.
The cocking of the guillotine shutter is ensured by moving a lever that can be locked halfway. Turning the knob moves a half-crown with notches bearing graduations from 1 to 3 for selecting the speed. The long trigger rod passes through a plate bearing the following inscription: "Déposé - L'Eclair - Poses Facultatives & Instantanées - H. MARCILLY - N° 256 – PARIS"
This rather unique camera is used with plates measuring 9 x 12, which are contained in reversible holders inserted from underneath.
The viewing can be done either through the viewfinders protected by metal shutters when the front face is lowered, or on the ground glass located at the rear of the chamber after removing a protective cover.
With the removable front face in place, it resembles a detective camera.
Access to the shutter and lens is possible when the front face is raised or removed.
After removing a rear cover, the ground glass inserts into guiding rails.
The lens bears no indication of focal length.
