Le Kowa SER est l'évolution du Kowa SE. Sur celui-ci, l'obturateur était dans l'objectif. Le déplacement de l'obturateur central derrière l'objectif a permis à Kowa de séparer l'objectif et ainsi de le rendre interchangeable.
