Chronology of cameras Hermagis

The Appareil Universel from Hermagis is a folding camera that was delivered during a long period (early 1900s to the 1930s), and also offered by other makers like Lorillon (as the Chambre Folding No. 2) or Photo Hall (as the Folding Perfect, although a set of different cameras were delivered under this name). The maker of all these cameras was probably E. Lorillon, and this specific model with Mattioli shutter was called the Chambre Folding No. 2 Bis in their catalogues.

The basic configuration had no focal plane shutter. The camera could be fitted with a range of central shutters (the body would be thinner though) as the default configuration, but also with a focal plane shutter on demand. The Stereomultiple is a modification of this camera.

Initially (until circa 1907) the camera could be fitted with Le Klopcic I shutter. During a period (c. 1907 to c. 1920) the cameras would be fitted with Mattioli FP shutter, and from around 1920 again with ‘Le Klopcic’’ II and III version shutters.

The camera is very well made, with fine woods (mahogany) covered with Moroccan leather, and this specimen has dark red leather bellows. It is designed for 13 x 19 format but could be made also for a wide range of formats including for stereoscopy. This specimen also has the fitting for the stereo septum, and the lensboard is designed to accommodate also a pair of stereoscopic lenses.

The Mattioli shutter, derived from the patent from 1903 (FR325570), delivers speeds up to 1/1000 plus time. The fitted lens is a H. Roussel Stylor with a focal lens of 210 mm and maximum aperture of 4.5.
