Chronology of cameras Bell and Howell
Although the development of the Stereo Colorist II began in 1954, the initial prototypes, based on the Stereo Colorist I, were not released until 1955. This camera was developed by Bodenseewerk based on the "Stereo Realist" principle (format 24 x 23 mm, 5 perforations) initiated by the David White Company, which quickly became a standard from 1947.
The Colorist II features a rangefinder coupled to the viewfinder, a feature absent in the Colorist I. The rangefinder has a shorter base than that of the Stereo Vivid (54 mm compared to 60.5 mm), and despite the viewfinder having a coefficient of x0.4 compared to x0.5 in its larger sibling, it results in slightly less precision. Fortunately, in both cases, the lens only opens at f/3.5.
The handling of the camera is pleasant, with all adjustments made on the front around the lenses: shutter speed on the right side, focus and aperture on the left side.
It is much more conventional than another camera from the same brand, the Stereo Vivid, which, on the other hand, was manufactured in the United States by the Three Dimension Company for Bell & Howell.
A brief instruction manual regarding film loading and rewinding is printed on the bottom of the camera.
