Chronology of cameras Graflex
In 1961, Graflex came up with a breakthrough innovation in the Graphic 35 Jet camera. Winding and cocking were entrusted to a pneumatic system. The pneumatic energy was obtained from a compressed gas cartridge similar to those used for siphons of seltz water. A leak in the system, resulting in unpredictable operation, led to a marketing failure for this model.
Following this setback, Graflex marketed a new, more conventional version. The pneumatic system gave way to a mechanical one, but the outside cosmetics remained unchanged.
It is this later version which is presented here. To be noticed on the baseplate is the round patch replacing the plug that used to close the port housing the compressed gas cartridge. The wording « Jet » has been retained in the name of the camera, however irrelevant at that stage.
The focusing system, controlled by the two buttons located right and left of the lens, is the same as on the Graphic 35. It is peculiar in that it moves the rear portion of the film chamber, to the contrary of usual systems which move the lens (or part thereof).
