Chronology of cameras Rollei

During WWII, the major industries in Germany, including Franke & Heidecke and Carl Zeiss, were contributing to the war effort. But with leftovers from the earlier few years and a very limited new production, F&H managed to make a few cameras during the war, including a few of the 4 x 4 Sports. Factory data indicate that a maximum of 500 cameras were produced. Serial numbers of the wartime Rolleiflex 4x4 Model 4 (440) began at 850,000, made between mid 1941 and early 1944. The camera is indistinguishable from the model 430, however was treated by F&H as a separate model – 440, the War Sports – and only serial numbers can identify it. This particular camera has serial 850,342.
