Ricoh utilise pour le RDC-4200 un architecture proche de celle du Nikon Coolpix 900 (à moins que cela ne soit l'inverse), c'est à dire un corps en deux parties, l'une supportant l'objectif et pivotante par rapport à l'autre. Là où Nikon a associé le zoom et le flash, Ricoh à choisi de ne mettre que l'objectif, ce qui implique que le flash n'éclaire pas forcément dans la direction de la visée.
Il est habillé d'alu brossé noir, ce qui lui confère une certaine élégance.
Il dispose d'une fonction d'accentuation du contraste qui permet de photographier, puis de lire plus facilement des documents.
