Chronology of cameras Vivitar
The Vivitar V635 is a Pentax K mount SLR. Exposure is either manual or automatic with aperture priority.
For this model, Dixons got its supplies from Cosina, the Vivitar V635 being a rebranded Cosina CT90.
Quite like the Miranda MS-3 which is also a rebadged Cosina CT90, the Vivitar is most often equipped with a manual focus 28-70 mm f1:3.5-4.8 MC Macro zoom.
However lenses with autofocus capability have been developed specifically for these cameras by Cosina. This explains why the Vivitar V635 is sometimes encountered with the AF logo screen printed in red identically to the Cosina CT90: on the front face of the top cover, under the rewind crank.
The corresponding user manual(*) is then titled "Vivitar AF V635, 35mm SLR camera with 28-70mm Auto Focus lens" (even if inside the manual the photos seem to show a 35-70 mm ...).
Anyway, the photos in the manual show a "stand-alone" AF lens as was done at the time, when the autofocus feature was introduced: batteries, detector and motor are added around a standard manual focus lens. Still according to this user manual, the focus is "Operated by lightly depressing Shutter Release Button on camera or Auto Focus Activator Button on lens."
The camera / lens coupling for AF is performed through 3 specific contacts (which do not correspond to those of Pentax KF or KAF mounts).
The Vivitar differs from the Miranda MS-3 in one point: the part of the top cover where the film speed selector index mark is has been modified on the Vivitar to include index marks for exposure compensation. This is done to the detriment of the film plane indicator which disappears.
(*) Notes:
- The copyright year is 1987 (on the back cover).
- The camera photographed in the manual does not have exposure compensation indexes, only the index for film speed selector dial.
