In the 2000s, it was crucial for manufacturers to establish themselves in the digital camera market. To achieve this, there were two main strategies: the race for technology or the race for price.
The race for technology primarily revolved around sensor resolution, but there were occasional pauses in this race as the technology itself reached a plateau. During such times, several brands sourced their sensors from the same supplier, resulting in cameras with similar sensor capabilities. In these instances, manufacturers needed to justify the release of new appealing models by adding or improving various features. One significant improvement was the image processing software, usually developed in-house by the brands. Entry-level models, which couldn't benefit from these costly enhancements reserved for mid-range and high-end models, had to settle for minor aesthetic improvements or the addition of rarely used gadgets.
The other strategy was to compete on price. The Canon Powershot A510 is typical of this commercial strategy. It wasn't better than its predecessors; in fact, its sensor had a lower resolution than some earlier models, but it was sold at a lower price. The loss of a few thousand pixels wasn't a deterrent for buyers who prioritized price over features. Nevertheless, the camera was good within its range and could satisfy its users.
In 2005, it was sold for 190 euros.
