Chronology of cameras OIP
The OIP (Société Belge d'Optique et d'Instruments de Précision) was founded in Ghent, Belgium, in 1918, by André Callier (1877-1938).
Despite not having an engineering degree, Callier was an authority in the field of optics ever since he discovered an optical phenomenon in 1909, which became known as the "Callier Effect."
OIP manufactured renowned lenses and optical instruments. In 1930, the range of lenses was expanded to include Miror (Tessar), Major, Labor (Cooke Triplet), and Melior (projection). It's worth noting that around the same time, the name "Major" was also used by Hermagis for one of their lenses.
OIP sold cameras, likely manufactured in Germany (Welta, Certo, Zeh, etc.), and assembled them with OIP lenses in Ghent.
On February 5, 1934, the Ghent factories were destroyed by a fire. They were modernized during the reconstruction. During World War II, until 1942, the factories were transferred to Roanne, France. Since the war, the company primarily focused on military applications.
