Chronology of cameras Aires

Aires Camera was a small Japanese manufacturer active during the 1950s. Production began with twin-lens reflex cameras.

The brand is relatively unknown in France because the cameras were not imported there. If you happen to find one in France, it's likely to have been brought directly from Japan or the United States, where the brand was also present, notably distributed by Kalimar.

The highlight of the brand was a series of beautiful 35mm rangefinder cameras, very well made, although over time, the shutters often became frozen.
Cameras in this series were named "Aires 35," often followed by a number in Roman numerals.

__________

Drawing from their extensive experience in producing 35mm rangefinder cameras, Aires aimed to enter the ranks of the elite camera manufacturers. Their engineers set to work on a "Top Model," a high-quality 35mm rangefinder camera with interchangeable lenses, a central shutter, and an integrated selenium light meter.

From this ambitious design brief, the Aires 35V was born—a truly magnificent camera.

It was available with either the H Coral 1.9/45mm lens or, optionally, with the ultra-bright S Coral 1.5/45mm lens. It could also be purchased as a complete system, including all three lenses (including the f1.5), their lens hoods, and filters. These offerings came in a splendid leather case, stamped with the Aires logo.

The lenses included were:

1. S Coral 1.5/45mm
2. W Coral 3.2/35mm
3. T Coral 3.5/100mm. This latter lens had a distinctly Germanic appearance.

The viewfinder was collimated for the two longer focal lengths, with the 35mm lens corresponding to the full frame. Outstanding quality and remarkable performance should have made this relatively unknown camera a commercial success. However, Contax and Nikon had sensed the changing winds and knew they were selling their last rangefinder cameras. Nikon was about to introduce its "F" series, marking the end of an era for most rangefinder cameras.

The Aires 35V arrived too late to alter the course of events but remains a superb yet underappreciated camera.
