In 1996, reassured by its successful experience with Contax G1 and to the professional customers request, Kyocera markets an improved version, logically baptized G2.
Compared to G1, the improvements relate especially on the autofocus system which becomes more nervous, and to the shutter. This one authorizes the 1/4000 second in manual mode, or the 1/6000 second in mode aperture priority.
Ergonomics is also re-examined, speeds and correction of exposure being dissociated on two distinct serrated rollers. Fault of place, the serrated roller of manual focusing is rejected on the fronting of the body, as on Contax manufactured by Zeiss Ikon in the Thirties.
The gust mode allows two speeds, 2 or 4 images/s, and the flash is synchronized until the 1/200s.
This camera is hardly bigger than G1, and its compatibility is total with the range of optics to mounting G.
A new flash, more compact, complete the system (TLA200, NG 20). The dating back has an intervalometer now.
Two lenses are also added with the range: the 21mm f/2,8 Biogon with external viewfinder, and the 35mm f/2 Planar which does not enjoy an excellent optical reputation (not very sharp, visible distortions). One can use these lenses on G1, on condition to update the autofocus system by Kyocera.
One surprising zoom “Vario Sonnar 35-70” will also come to complete the offer, only for G2.
A black completion will make its appearance later on, in the form of limited series, at the request of customers who wished more discretion. Rarer, it is searched by the collectors.
In 2005, Kyocera sells its photo department to Cosina, which stop the production of G2.
In 1996, this camera cost the moderate amount of 11,900 francs, naked body!
