Chronology of cameras Kodak
This 6 x 9 folder, strictly named No. 1 Special Kodak Model - A, produced since the middle of the First World War and probably for ten years, has as particularity its all-metal body with back and bed covered with leather and bakelite sides with diamond pattern facilitating a good grip. Concerning the back, which withdraws to load the roll-film, it is expandable; lengthening by 2.5 cm it is easily removed. The loading / unloading of the rollfilms is further facilitated by tilting spool holders, hinged and against which a flank is itself also hinged. In short, it was at the time a top of the range camera.
Putting in operation is manual: you have to open the bed (side button) then pull the bellows to the front by pressing on both sides two push buttons. The focusing is done by a well classic lever on the side of the unit with scale in meters and feet.
Moreover, this version is equipped with a quality pneumatic shutter Velosto No. 1 (In USA, it was called Optimo No. 1) (patent filed June 14, 1910) with slow speeds and reaching 1 / 300th, always functional and pretty accurate. On this model the lens is modest: an anastigmat Bausch & Lomb No. 1 opening to 6.3. We may find the same camera fitted with Zeiss Tessar.
The trigger is double and the camera presented, such as those on some vintage advertisements, was fitted with a separate thread just beside the nice trigger button , for connection of a cable release ... 4 cm long and stored suitably inside the camera. Yet it remains that this accessory does not appear on the image.
As it should be, the bed is fitted with a stand engraved Kodak, as well as a small side stand which allows horizontal photos, camera on the side.
This particular model was sold to its first owner at the Westminster Photographic Exchange, Oxford Street, London, as evidenced by an inscription in golden letters in the transport case and a small metal plate embedded in the body.
