Le Pentax 645 incarne la transposition au moyen-format des qualités et des facilités du 24 x 36 moderne. Un moteur entraîne le film, il a de multiples modes d'exposition, une bonne tenue en main permettant de travailler à hauteur d'oeil.
Les objectifs doivent avoir une monture Pentax 645. Un mode spécial permet d'utiliser les objectifs avec obturateurs centraux.
Il est possible en cas de défaillance des piles de faire avancer le film en utilisant le bouton d'armement et de l'utiliser au 1/50.
