Chronology of cameras Leica
In the years that followed WWII, German products were unavailable in France. The Leica importer in France, Tiranty, resorted to a production in the French occupation zone in Germany, and had some batches of cameras manufactured by the Saroptico factory located in Saarland. These cameras were assembled from batches of Leica IIIA parts, but their procurement being difficult, there is a degree of variability in the way these models were completed.
Accordingly, some differences can be noted in the « Germany Monté en Sarre » engraving, on the type of winding knob which can be without or with film memento (this one a IIIF part), and on the covering which is sometimes of the « Sharkskin » type.
It is noteworthy that there are notorious fakes, with certain engravings which are easy to identify as fanciful, whereas others can be considerably more difficult to recognize.
The « Monté en Sarre » models are reputed to be included in a serial numbering interval ranging from 359 000 to 359 400, but certain authors have described some with higher numbers. As far as quality is concerned, the finish of these cameras was not on par with models assembled by Leitz, and some repairmen have reported adjusting and drilling problems, with screws not facing their corresponding holes!
