Le 35 FM a la même présentation extérieure que les Ricoh 500 (ST, ZF, ME et RF), mais son positionnement dans la gamme est beaucoup plus bas. Il s'agit d'un appareil très dépouillé. Il n'a qu'une seule vitesse d'obturation (1/125 ème). La cellule CdS gère l'exposition au moment du déclenchement. Il n'y a pas de mode manuel.
L'exposition peut être mémorisée par une pression partielle sur le déclencheur.
Les valeurs d'exposition sont indiquées par une aiguille mobile dans le viseur. On y trouve également un témoin de sous-exposition.
La mise au point est manuelle.
