Chronology of cameras Beck R J

R & J Beck are best known for their optical manufacturing and for having released the earlier Frena cameras, which used film packs. The company is less well known for their cameras using film processes, which had varying degrees of success.
Around 1905 Beck released the roll film camera, the Roll Film Cornex, the only one of its kind made by the company. Its format is 3¼ x 4¼”, or approximately 8 x 10.5 cm.

Some of the company’s magazine box cameras also bear this name of Cornex. It comes from the depth of field indicator, the Cornex Index. On the folding camera, it is located on the side of the lens carrier.

As with all Beck cameras, the workmanship is very good. The body is mahogany, covered with a fine grain leather. The wooden body is screwed together, in order to withstand tropical humidity. The bellows are in red leather, characteristic of the time.

As an option, a back was available to use the camera with a quarter-plate format glass plate.

While there are many lens and shutter variants available, our example is a CY or KY model, characterized by the Isostigmar lens opening at f/5.8 and the Celverex shutter. The KY model is the “De Luxe” version of the CY. It is not known how the two versions differ.

The rectifier viewfinder is missing from this example.

In 1854, two brothers, Richard and Joseph Beck, renamed their London-based optics and microscope company to R & J Beck Ltd after the withdrawal of their third partner, James Smith. The production of cameras began in 1880, and it was in 1892 that the Frena models with their unique system of a notched-edge roll film magazine were introduced.
