Chronology of cameras Beck R J
Introduced in 1896, the Frena No. 3 is the largest model in the Frena lineup.
The No. 3 produces photos in the 4 x 5-inch format. Its operation is similar to that of all other Frena models.
This specimen is a first-generation No. 3, featuring an eccentric-type film advance lever, which was replaced by the bar-type lever around 1899, between serial numbers 13000 and 14000.
This first generation already had a lens system for distance adjustment on a rotating plate in front of the lens, a system that later also equipped the second generation of Frena No. 2 models.
The lens is a Rapid Rectilinear with a focal length equivalent to 165 mm.
The presented specimen bears the number 5793, dating it to around 1896-1897.
In 1854, two brothers, Richard and Joseph Beck, renamed their London-based optics and microscope company to R & J Beck Ltd after the withdrawal of their third partner, James Smith. The production of cameras began in 1880, and it was in 1892 that the Frena models with their unique system of a notched-edge roll film magazine were introduced.
