While models D and F use quarter-plate format film like the A, B and C models, their technical specifications and finish are of a higher standard, as is their price, which is three to six times higher than that of a model A.
The technical differences include the adoption of a central shutter, easily accessible for adjustments through the front part of the camera that opens. All lenses available for both models are from the Beck brand and have focus capability. The manufacturing is described as screwed, providing better stability in case of humidity changes. Thick leather is used for covering. There is a pneumatic shutter release. The D and F models also exist in a tropical version, in which the metal parts are made of brass to prevent oxidation.

In 1854, two brothers, Richard and Joseph Beck, renamed their London-based optics and microscope company to R & J Beck Ltd after the withdrawal of their third partner, James Smith. The production of cameras began in 1880, and it was in 1892 that the Frena models with their unique system of a notched-edge roll film magazine were introduced.
