Chronology of cameras Beck R J
The first version of the Beck Frena appeared in 1892. From 1893, following the release of the Frena N° 2, it became the Beck Frena N° 1 and underwent some small modifications, such as moving the trigger button upward and, most notably, adding front access to facilitate speed adjustments. Slightly more practical on the Frena N° 1 but very difficult on the original Frena.
Apart from that, the specifications remain the same, including its particular photo format of 3 1/4 x 3 1/4 and the storage of exposed films at the bottom of the device instead of in the back, as with other Frena models.
The lens is a fast rectilinear without focusing, and there is no possibility of using additional lenses as with later Frena models.
The presented specimen bears the number 1216.
The first version of the Frena is hard to find because it remained in the catalog for only a year before evolving into N° 1.
In 1854, two brothers, Richard and Joseph Beck, renamed their London-based optics and microscope company to R & J Beck Ltd after the withdrawal of their third partner, James Smith. The production of cameras began in 1880, and it was in 1892 that the Frena models with their unique system of a notched-edge roll film magazine were introduced.
