Chronology of cameras Haking

It is thanks to a patent number appearing on an Ansco camera identical in every respect to this one that it was possible to identify the manufacturer of this camera. The patent concerns a system against double exposure. It was filed in 1984 by Haking.

The features are modest. There are no electronic circuits. Film advance and rewinding are manual. It's a fixed-focus, with a plastic meniscus lens (11/28 mm). Depending on the versions, it is indicated as "Panorama" or "Panoramic Lens". It should be understood that the top and bottom of the negative are masked in the darkroom. On some examples, it is specified that during development, a panoramic print should be requested, which means that the printing staff will have to make two cuts with scissors to eliminate the black bands appearing at the top and bottom of the print, resulting from the masking of the negative. The viewfinder has a shape proportional to that of the final print (like 16/9). The model seems to have had a long life and has evolved slightly over time. A more recent version, with the reference A-360CII, allows changing the useful format of the negative. A small lever located at the back allows switching from panoramic framing to the standard 24 x 36 format. This modification is possible even with film in place.

This camera is found under a few known brands, including Ansco, but most of the time, it's used as a promotional item. Manufacturing can be from Hong Kong (until 1997, the year of the handover of Hong Kong to China), Chinese, or Thai.

Finally, the model exists under Haking, under the name Halina Panorama. If only we could have started with that, it would have saved long hours of research to identify the manufacturer.
